Getting off the boat

After a year-long hiatus, the B.R.A.I.N. blog is back. Just a brief introduction, my name is Mike and I just got off the boat, well maybe an airplane, and I am working with a great team here on the 5th floor at the Dallas Public Library to provide help to businesses in the Dallas community. Think of us as an extension to your marketing or R & D team because that is what we are here to do. Like many in the transient community, I experienced a short brush with being “unhoused”. The Dallas Public Library recruited me from Vietnam and I had to move here. In the process, my son and I came to Dallas, stayed in a hotel in Irving, and began life as Americans. When I left Vietnam, all my credit cards were canceled because the banks did not trust me to pay them from America so we ventured forth with cash. In Vietnam, almost everything is paid for with cash and in America, many Americans pay for everything with a credit or debit card. We had three suitcases, no furniture, no car, and no credit. If we were truly homeless, where would we find the money for a big deposit?

Happily, I have friends in Dallas and they helped smooth things over at the rental agency. Otherwise, my son and I might still be in that hotel in Irving with my three suitcases wondering when I might find affordable housing.  My experience as “unhoused”, albeit brief, acts as a reminder to me how tenuous the line is between success and “bad-luck”.  Here at the B.R.A.I.N. Institute we strive to help you the entrepreneur, the self-employed, or a start-up mitigate the potential for bad-luck. We are not all-knowing wise sages with all the answers to your questions but we know where to look for the answers and find solutions. Have you experienced a moment of being unhoused? Send us your story.

Now, that I am ‘off the boat’ and working with a great team, come put us to work helping you grow your business here in Dallas, just ask for Mike – email me at [email protected] to set-up a one-on-one. If you can’t reach me just email the team at: [email protected].
