Dallas County Clerk

The Dallas County Clerk administers the assumed name process in Dallas County. Sole proprietorships and general partnerships must file an assumed name certificate in the county where they will do business.

About

The Texas Business and Commerce Code require businesses to file assumed name certificates. In addition, most banks will not allow a business checking account to open without a proper filing.

WALK IN – Complete form; all owners must be present with valid government issued ID in order to have the form recorded.

MAIL IN – Submit a written request for the Assumed Name form along with a self addressed stamped envelope. Please indicate if you need the Incorporated or the unincorporated form.

Have form notarized and mail to:

John F. Warren, County Clerk
Attention: Assumed Name Department
1201 Elm St., 22nd Floor
Dallas, TX 75270

The filing fee is $24.00 and .50 for each additional partner (owner) after the first.

Add a $2.00 Acknowledgement fee if the deputy takes the acknowledgment instead of a notary.

Hours: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday – Friday (except for Court Approved Holidays)

The filing neither of an assumed name certificate nor the reservation or registration of a company name imparts any real protection to the party filing. It is merely a formal process that informs the public of the registered agent for a business, and where an official contact made with the business.
